How do I factory reset my controller? Rachio 3, Generation 2, and Generation 1

Summary

As with all electronic devices, some issues may occur that prevents the controller from working properly. You may attempt to perform a Factory Reset on the Rachio controller to get it up and running again.

Primary reasons for a Factory Reset

  1. Wi-Fi setup error

If you attempted to connect your controller to Wi-Fi via your phone's Wi-Fi settings (i.e. Add Wi-Fi accessory), a factory reset is required to clear the controller's memory before reattempting to connect via the Rachio app.

  2. Changing Owners

If your Rachio controller is changing hands (selling, moving, transferring from installer account, etc.), you can perform a Factory Reset to clear all data and ensure a smooth transfer to the new owner. If you received or purchased a used controller, it will need to be deleted from the 1st owner's Rachio account before it can be added to your Rachio account.

Did you move to a home with a Rachio?

Did you inherit a used controller when moving to a home with a Rachio? We recommend transferring ownership and clearing all settings.

WARNING

FACTORY RESET CANNOT BE UNDONE. Removing the controller from the app will delete all data from your controller, including zone settings, schedules, water usage, watering history, etc.

To perform a factory reset of Rachio 3, Generation 2, or Generation 1 using the Controller Settings menu, follow these steps:

  1. From the Home screen, select the "More" tab.
  2. Select "Controller Settings" and find "REMOVE CONTROLLER" towards the bottom of your screen.
  3. If you wish to permanently delete the data associated with your controller, click on it and select "Remove" from the warning label.
  4. If your controller is offline for any reason, you will have to also reset using the buttons on the controller too explained below.

Option 2: Controller reset using the buttons on the controller

To perform a factory reset of Rachio 3 or Generation 2 using the buttons on the controller, follow these steps:

For Rachio 3 controllers:

  1. Power cycle the controller by unplugging it and plugging back in. Wait for it to boot again.
  2. Hold down the stop button until the light bar fully illuminates. The Rachio 3 will flash blue light to indicate success. The device will then shut down (white light bar shrinking to the middle), reboot (first quadrant flashing), and then get to quadrant 2 blinking amber (ready to connect to Wi-Fi).
  3. If you have a Rachio account, the controller will still need to be deleted from the app (Option 1, above) in order to completely remove the controller from your account (or prior owner's account).

For Generation 2 controllers:

  1. Unplug the controller.
  2. Press and hold the UP ARROW and SELECT BUTTON simultaneously and plug the controller in. Keep holding the buttons until the LED light ring is fully illuminated, then release.
  3. If you have a Rachio account, the controller will still need to be deleted from the app (Option 1, above) in order to completely remove the controller from your account (or prior owner's account).
