## General Troubleshooting Tips

Before diving into LED indicators or reset procedures, try the following:

* Make sure your outlet has power.
* Confirm your bulbs are 12V–15V and rated for dimming if that feature is enabled.
* Ensure you’re using the Rachio app onboarding flow, not the OS-level Matter popup on your phone. Sometimes a mobile device's Bluetooth will detect devices automatically and prompt you to pair them directly to a smart home hub. We recommend using the Rachio app first for onboarding, then linking with any smart home services afterwards if desired.
* Ensure your mobile device is connected to the same WiFi network you want to connect the SLC to.
* If setup stalls, try rebooting your router and power cycling the controller before performing any resets.

## Connectivity Troubleshooting with Connection Status LEDs

### Power Light is Off (Controller Not Powering On)

![](https://cdn.kustomerhostedcontent.com/media/5f775c7b7cad407e578daa84/040b2d9302e1be3864da122ed421febb.png)

If the SLC does not power on and progress to blinking yellow when plugged in, the outlet is most likely not providing power to the SLC.

#### Troubleshooting Steps to Try:

* Test the outlet with another device to see if it has power.
* Try a different grounded outlet to see if the controller powers on.
* If power is verified and still no response, contact Rachio Support.

* * *

### Stuck on Blinking Yellow

![](https://cdn.kustomerhostedcontent.com/media/5f775c7b7cad407e578daa84/4c337ea3ba12ece151cf8b2a8d23f021.gif)

If the SLC is stuck blinking yellow and does not progress to a solid blue light when attempting to connect, there may be a problem with Bluetooth on your mobile device.

#### Troubleshooting Steps to Try:

* Make sure Bluetooth is enabled on your mobile device before attempting to connect.
* Once enabled, close the Rachio App. Then reopen the app and attempt to connect SLC again.

* * *

### Stuck on Solid Blue

![](https://cdn.kustomerhostedcontent.com/media/5f775c7b7cad407e578daa84/5739e46ac33a30eea87a9e80b893f1ad.png)

If the SLC is solid blue and fails to progress to blinking yellow during pairing, it is either not receiving WiFi information from your mobile device, or the WiFi information being relayed to SLC by your mobile device is not compatible with SLC.

#### Troubleshooting Steps to Try:

* Make sure the pairing device is within Bluetooth range of the SLC (less than 5ft).
* Ensure the SLC is within WiFi range of your router or access point by placing your mobile device near the SLC and check the strength of the WiFi signal in your mobile device's WiFi settings.
* If WiFi signal is strong, [power cycle the controller](#power-cycle), and attempt to reconnect.
* If SLC still fails to blink yellow, it’s possible the WiFi network settings are not compatible.
    * SLC is compatible with WPA2 and WPA2/WPA3 PSK WiFi encryption. The controller is not compatible with WPA3-only networks or enterprise level encryption types.
    * SLC is dual-band 2.4GHz / 5GHz WiFi compatible. SLC is not compatible with 6GHz WiFi networks.

### Stuck on Blinking Yellow During Connection Attempt

![](https://cdn.kustomerhostedcontent.com/media/5f775c7b7cad407e578daa84/4d2dcb18cdb3228a154cb91aae65d6c7.gif)

If SLC is stuck on blinking yellow during connection and fails to progress to blinking blue, it’s possible the WiFi signal is still not strong enough, or there are router settings or blocked ports that are preventing the controller from connecting.

#### Troubleshooting Steps to Try:

* Power cycle your WiFi router (and access point if different).
* Once the router comes back online, place your mobile device near the SLC and check the strength of the WiFi signal in your mobile device's WiFi settings.
* If the signal is weak, consider adding an additional WiFi access point or range extender.
* Check your WiFi network name (SSID) and password for special characters. SLC is not compatible with characters such as: #, %, $, &, emojis, etc.
* Check your router settings for blocked ports. The SLC requires all of the following ports to be open to ensure proper connection to your router or access point: 53, 123, and 5353
* [Perform a WiFi Reset](#wifi-reset) on SLC before attempting to reconnect.

* * *

### Stuck on Blinking Blue

![](https://cdn.kustomerhostedcontent.com/media/5f775c7b7cad407e578daa84/e78164e24c239d03bf2b9f9e232ff97f.gif)

If SLC is stuck on blinking blue, it is connected to the WiFi network but is having trouble reaching the Rachio server.

#### _Troubleshooting_ Steps to Try:

* Power cycle the router, access point, or any range extenders.

* Check your router settings for blocked ports. The SLC requires all of the following ports to be open to ensure proper connection to the server: 8883, 443, and 5540
* [Perform a WiFi Reset](#wifi-reset) on SLC before attempting to reconnect.
* If the SLC fails to connect, contact Rachio Support so we can provide further assistance.

### Stuck on Green/Blue Alternating

![](https://cdn.kustomerhostedcontent.com/media/5f775c7b7cad407e578daa84/4db9103484bc6624045940db798d1c8e.gif)

If the controller flashes green/blue alternating for an extended period and never gets to solid green, or if it does progress to solid green but does not appear in the Rachio App, it’s most likely the controller was onboarded outside of the Rachio App onboarding flow. This means the SLC was connected directly to your Matter hub (Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Apple Home, etc.)

#### Troubleshooting Steps to Try:

* [Perform a WiFi reset](#wifi-reset). Once the controller reboots and the LED is steadily flashing yellow again, attempt to reconnect in the Rachio App by tapping the Add Device Button (+) and selecting Lighting Controller. **If your mobile device displays a popup prompting you to connect SLC before you've scanned the QR code in the Rachio App, cancel the popup and continue with the flow in the Rachio app.**
* If a WiFi reset fails, a [Factory Reset](#factory-reset) can be performed before attempting to reconnect. After the Factory Reset, the steps are the same:  Once the controller reboots and the LED is steadily flashing yellow again, attempt to reconnect in the Rachio App by tapping the Add Device Button (+) and selecting Lighting Controller. If your mobile device displays a popup prompting you to connect SLC before you've scanned the QR code in the Rachio App, cancel the popup and continue with the flow in the Rachio app.

### Solid Green - Can't Pair to Rachio OR Not Visible in Rachio App

![](https://cdn.kustomerhostedcontent.com/media/5f775c7b7cad407e578daa84/90144d9a716683ebd0f047d0bc1d5810.png)

**If the controller's LED is solid green, it is connected to Rachio, or another Matter platform.**

#### If you can't connect SLC to Rachio, or if you can't see the SLC in the Rachio App after attempting to connect, it's likely the SLC is already connected to a different Matter-enabled smart home app (Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, etc.). Refresh the Rachio app to see if SLC appears. If not, try the troubleshooting steps below to connect SLC to Rachio:

* Open the Rachio app on your Android or iOS device.
* From the Devices screen, tap "+" to add a new device and select Lighting Controller.
* Open the controller’s front plate. Then tap “Scan QR Code” in the app and scan the QR code using your device.
* Tap **"This device has already been set up in a Matter-supported app"**, and follow the steps to retrieve and copy your pairing code from your smart home app.
* Enter your pairing code in the Rachio App and tap "Next"
* Progress through the in-app flow to connect to Rachio.
* The SLC will now be visible in both the Rachio App, and the smart home app to which it was originally connected.

## Error State LEDs

The Rachio SLC has several safety features. Their light codes and descriptions are listed below:

LED Behavior

Meaning

Solid Orange

Overcurrent detected — wiring short or wattage overload

Blinking Red

Overtemperature — controller has shut down

Solid Red

Self-test failed — power cycle required

Blinking Blue

WiFi connected, cannot reach Rachio server — power cycle router

Solid Yellow

WiFi saved, cannot connect to network — power cycle router

Solid Yellow (after timeout)

Bluetooth timeout — not onboarded in 15 min; power cycle required

#### Note

Overcurrent and overtemperature alerts are safety features and therefore need to act quickly. If the SLC is required to shut down immediately, it may not have time to trigger email alerts. Subsequently, these events may not appear in the event history if shutdown is too rapid.

## WiFi Signal Strength and Maintaining Connection

If your SLC connects to WiFi but frequently falls offline, there is most likely a WiFi strength or range issue causing this intermittent connectivity. You can also follow the steps below to confirm healthy signal strength before initial installation.

#### Troubleshooting Steps to Try:

* Check the SLC's current RSSI (signal strength) in the Rachio app:
    * In the app, tap the gear/settings tab in the bottom right corner > tap the SLC under "Devices" > tap "Technical Info"
    * View the RSSI. A healthy RSSI to maintain connectivity is between -65 and -30.
    * If your RSSI falls outside of that range, consider moving the SLC, or adding an additional WiFi access point or range extender to your WiFi network for better coverage.
    * NOTE: RSSI is not a function of distance alone. Objects in your home, especially those which emit an electromagnetic field (microwaves, baby monitors, cameras, refrigerators, washing machines, HVAC components) can have a substantial impact on RSSI and overall WiFi performance. Your SLC may seem close enough to your WiFi router when compared to your other smart devices, but could still be experiencing interference.

* * *

## Power & Recovery Behavior

* **After power loss:** SLC restores last lighting state and resumes schedules
* **After power cycle:** No data lost; reconnects automatically
* **After factory reset:** All data wiped; reconnect to WiFi via the Update WiFi network flow in the SLC's settings in the Rachio app to restore settings from account
* **Battery backup:** Internal battery maintains timekeeping if offline

## Lighting Issues (Flickering, Not Turning On)

###

### Flickering Lights

* Check for loose or poorly seated wires.
* Usually caused by trying to dim non-dimmable bulbs.
* Ensure bulbs are dimmable (if dimming is enabled).
* Disable dimming in app, or switch to dimmable 12V–15V bulbs.
* Replace low-quality or mismatched bulbs.

### Lights Not Turning On

* Confirm wires are clamped properly
* Re-strip wire ends if too little copper is exposed
* Lift connectors and gently move wires side to side with the zone turned on.
* Check wire polarity; If applicable, attach positive (+) to left terminal, and negative (-) to right terminal.
* Use a multimeter (200V DC) to check voltage: healthy output is ~14.5V–15.5V.

* * *

## Overcurrent & Overtemperature Events

###

### Overcurrent

*   All zones turn off
* Triggered by shorts or exceeding 200W
* Reduce load or isolate faulty fixtures.
*   Inspect for wiring shorts.
* Email Alerts may not send if shutdown is immediate

### Overtemperature

* Let device cool and power back on
* Email Alerts may not send if shutdown is immediate

* * *
