# What is Weather Intelligence™ Plus?

Weather Intelligence™ Plus is a software feature available to all Rachio smart watering devices. It provides your devices with current and projected hyper-local weather data that’s not only in your area but right outside your door. No other smart sprinkler controller offers weather monitoring this precise or reliable. This data can act as weather triggers to skip watering schedules or adjust watering durations, saving you water. Additionally, no extra hardware or external sensors are required to use Weather Intelligence™ Plus!

**What are the functions of Weather Intelligence™ Plus?**

*   Rain Skip
*   Wind Skip
*   Saturation Skip
*   Freeze Skip

**How does Weather Intelligence™ Plus work?**

Rachio receives weather reports from our weather service detailing the weather conditions before and after the watering time, checking both 12 hours and 1 hour before the scheduled run. If these conditions meet or exceed your pre-set threshold, the watering schedule is skipped, saving you from over-watering and saving money.

Weather data is provided by the weather source you’ve selected for your property; this could be the interpolated Weather Network, a specific weather station, or a connected Tempest Personal Weather Station (PWS) at your home.

Rachio’s self-healing Weather Intelligence™ Plus network empowers the most accurate weather scheduling available by combining data from national weather stations, more than 300,000 personal weather stations, satellite data, radar data, and more to provide hyperlocal forecasting that’s accurate to the location of your controller.

**How is Weather Intelligence™ Plus Self-Healing?**

Is there a problem with your selected weather station? With our new Self-Healing feature, Weather Intelligence™ Plus can now take action to help. If your weather station stops reporting data for three days or more, Rachio will switch to the closest reporting station and then send you an email notifying you of the change. ![](https://cdn.kustomerhostedcontent.com/media/5f775c7b7cad407e578daa84/d9ff656358025e967262022d9d24a277.png)

Want to know how this feature works in practice? Check out this example from our Rachio [Community](https://community.rachio.com/t/3-years-in-and-rachio-still-impresses/16409), where a user's Rachio automatically self-healed when a previous station was experiencing trouble

# Rain and Freeze Skip & FAQ

Rain Skip saves you water by skipping watering schedules before it rains. Freeze skips can be set up on a schedule to avoid watering when the air temperature is at or near freezing. Not only is watering in cold conditions rarely necessary, but doing so can damage nozzles and plants when ice forms.

This short one-minute video will walk you through Rachio's Rain & Freeze Skip Weather Intelligence features and will provide some guidance on how to use them.

### Rain Skip FAQ

**How does Rain Skip work?**

Weather Intelligence checks the forecast 12 hours before, and again 1 hour before your schedule is set to run, tracking the amount of observed and forecasted rain in a sliding 48-hour window. This means it’s looking at any observed rain in the last 24 hours, plus any forecasted rain in the next 24 hours. If the combined rainfall exceeds your device’s skip threshold, the scheduled run will skip.

For example: You have your Rain Skip threshold set to 0.5". It rained 0.25" in the last 24 hours, and is expected to water more than 0.25" in the _next_ 24 hours. This schedule will be skipped.

###

**Does Rain Skip actually save water?**

Yes! Rain Skip saves the average homeowner thousands of gallons of water each year because it skips schedules _before_ it rains. Rain Sensors only skip schedules _after_ it has already rained, as they need to physically "feel" the rain.

**Rain skip triggered a schedule skip, but it didn’t rain. What’s the deal?**

Just like the weatherman, not all forecasts are accurate. Rain Skip is only as accurate as the data it receives from your preferred weather source/station. The schedule creator defaults to a skip threshold of 1/8". If you wish to save the maximum amount of water and want to skip whenever possible, set the Rain Skip threshold to 1/16" (trace rainfall).

###

**Why is my schedule with Rain Skip enabled still running even though it rained?**

If your Flex Daily schedule is still running even though it's raining, it could simply be due to the fact that the schedule believes the amount of natural precipitation is not enough to supply your vegetation with the amount of water it needs. If your Fixed or Flex Monthly schedule (with Rain Skip enabled) is still running when it's raining, it simply means the weather thresholds you've set in the app settings have not been met to trigger a skip.

You can also check if your weather station is reporting accurate information. If it shows no precipitation (even though _you_ may have observed some), there would be no indication that Rachio should skip the schedule. If you find issues with your weather station, try picking a new one, or switch to our Weather Network.

If the Rachio app shows a schedule that was skipped, but you observed the schedule running as planned, check to make sure that your controller was connected before and during the scheduled run. If the controller was offline, a weather check would not have been able to be completed.

###

**The weather reports for my house are often inaccurate. Should I use Rain Skip?**

_We_ think so, but you know your lawn and local weather best. The Rachio app will always default to Weather Intelligence™ Plus. Oftentimes, however, there are Personal Weather Stations (PWS) that are closer to your house and might better represent your local micro-climate. If you still experience inconsistencies, a rain sensor may help bridge the gap between the precipitation observed by the closest station and the true precipitation observed at your home.

###

**I have two controllers - why did Rain Skip behave differently on each?**

Forecasts can change in a matter of hours, so if those controllers have schedules with different start times, the weather will be checked at different times. While one check may say rain when checked at 8:00, the other may not when checked at 8:30.

###

**Should I adjust my Rain Skip threshold, and what is the default?**

The default rain skip threshold is ⅛ inch over 48 hours. This is not a lot of rain, but it is a sensitive enough value that most people should get rain skips when rain is accurately forecasted. Weather forecasting is uncertain, so you may want to adjust your threshold. You can choose a skip threshold between 1/16  inch and ¾ inch.

If you feel you are getting too many rain skips, i.e. skips when it’s only raining a little bit, consider increasing your skip threshold. If you feel you want more sensitive rain skips, i.e. your sprinklers are watering during light rain, and you want them to stop, consider reducing the threshold to 1/16th inch.

### Freeze Skip FAQ

**When does Freeze Skip check the temperature?**

Freeze Skip, one of Rachio's five Weather Intelligence features, checks the observed temperature one hour before your scheduled watering time.

###

**How does this check work?**

Anytime the observed temperature is at or below the selected threshold, Freeze Skip will be triggered, and your watering schedule will be skipped. In other words, if your Freeze Skip threshold is set to 40 degrees Fahrenheit and your weather station registers temperatures of 40 degrees or below, your watering will skip.

The default freeze skip threshold is 32 F (0 C). Threshold options range from 32 to 45 degrees.

# Wind Skip & FAQ

Prevent waste by skipping waterings when high winds are likely to scatter water intended for your plants. If wind speeds exceed your predetermined threshold, Rachio will automatically skip your scheduled watering.

### FAQ

**How does this check work?**

If high wind speeds are expected to exceed your predetermined threshold at your scheduled start time, your schedule will be skipped. This is because strong winds are likely to disperse the water intended for your plants and leave your vegetation thirsty.

###

**How do I adjust my Wind Skip threshold, and what is the default?**

The default wind skip threshold is 20 mph (32.1 kph); you can set a value between 10 mph and 40 mph.

# Saturation Skip & FAQ

This feature will skip only fixed schedule watering when the soil moisture balance of ALL zones will stay above the allowed depletion threshold until the next scheduled watering. This short video explains how the saturation skip works and why it's important to the system.

Saturation Skip determines if your yard has enough moisture to last until your next scheduled watering time. There are a few principles that guide Saturation Skip:

* Think of your soil as a sponge. You want the "sponge" to stay moist at all times. (For details, visit **[Determining Zone Attribute Selection](https://support.rachio.com/en_us/determining-zone-attribute-selection-Sy01WuQlx)).**
* You don’t want to add water to the "sponge" if it is already completely saturated.
* Mother Nature can help keep the "sponge" moist for free!

Rachio software understands how wet/dry your soil is at any given time, and it will issue a Saturation Skip anytime it determines your soil holds enough moisture to last until your next scheduled watering time.

**How does Saturation Skip work?**

Saturation Skip uses evapotranspiration data (ET data) from observed weather and forecasts to calculate the soil moisture balance in your soil. In other words, it knows how many "miles" your lawn's "gas tank" has left and if you can make it to the next gas station comfortably.

#### Here's how it works:

1. **Weather check.**

One hour before a scheduled watering time, Rachio will perform a weather check to see if any of the Weather Intelligence skips can be triggered

2. **Zone calculations.**

Saturation Skip makes a simple calculation for each zone in a schedule that checks to see if the observed and forecasted weather will maintain the moisture requirements of a zone until the next scheduled watering.

3. **Saturation Skip issued (if applicable).**

If this calculation is positive for all zones in the schedule, then Rachio will issue a Saturation Skip. If the calculation is negative for any zone in the schedule, then Rachio will not issue a Saturation Skip.

###

### FAQ

**How far into the future can Saturation Skip predict?**

Saturation Skip will track weather data for the last 7 days and forecast 7 days into the future (14-day sliding window). If you have a scheduled interval longer than 7 days in the future, Saturation Skip will be disabled.

**How can I activate Saturation Skip?**

Saturation Skip is _automatically activated in Flex Daily schedules_, as this feature is critical for maximum water savings, and cannot be deactivated with this schedule type.

Saturation Skip is an optional Weather Intelligence feature on both Flex Monthly and Fixed schedule types. To activate or deactivate Saturation Skip in these schedule types, see the section "Weather Skips Settings" below.

**Saturation skip has no threshold settings. Why is that?**

Saturation skip is a feature that constantly monitors the daily zone-by-zone moisture tracking that drives Flex Daily schedules. Since it doesn’t depend on just one weather input, it doesn’t have a threshold setting. However, the same adjustments you can make to zones to tune Flex Daily will affect your zone’s sensitivity to saturation skips.

## Tips and Troubleshooting

Is saturation Skip not behaving as it should? Here are a few tips.

**1\. Check your weather source**

Make sure it's similar to the weather you're experiencing, and if not, you may double-check your weather source. If you are connected to a single weather station, ensure that it is connected to a close station from where the controller is installed. If you are connected to a Weather Network, you may try connecting to a single weather station.

**2\. Check your zone settings.**

The most important settings for Saturation Skip are  Vegetation Type and  Shade, so make sure your zone settings are accurate.

**3\. Separate schedules by vegetation type!**

"Low moisture" is a subjective term determined by  Vegetation Type. Separate your schedules based on this to improve the accuracy of the Saturation Skip.

# Seasonal Shift & FAQ

Seasonal Shift automatically adjusts your watering duration on Fixed schedules throughout the year to ensure your yard receives the right amount of water. As temperatures rise during the spring and summer, Seasonal Shift increases zone run times to account for higher water needs. As the weather cools, typically in late summer and fall, it reduces watering durations accordingly. Think of Seasonal Shift as your schedule’s auto-pilot, adapting to the seasons so you don’t have to.

When Seasonal Shift is enabled, your schedule updates at the beginning of each month using 10 years of historical weather almanac data for your area. This data helps determine whether watering times should be longer in warmer months or shorter in cooler ones, keeping your watering efficient and consistent year-round.

#### Note

Seasonal Shift cannot be enabled or disabled on Flexible Monthly and Flex Daily schedules because these schedules automatically adjust watering to achieve the same result.

This short one-minute video will explain how Seasonal Shift works.

### **FAQ**

**What if I change the durations for a zone?**

If you manually change the watering duration for a specific zone, the next time Seasonal Shift runs, it will update that zone's watering duration with a relative seasonal adjustment. In other words, Seasonal Shift will use the new duration you set as the baseline when making seasonal adjustments in the future.

**What happens if I change my Zone Settings?**

Changing your standard or "advanced" zone settings has the potential to affect the watering duration and interval of any schedules with Seasonal Shift enabled (including Flex schedules, which have Seasonal Shift always enabled). After you make zone settings changes, check the watering durations of any Fixed schedules with Seasonal Shift enabled to ensure they meet your watering needs.

**What happens if I enable Seasonal Shift on a pre-existing Fixed Schedule?**

When you enable Seasonal Shift on a pre-existing Fixed Schedule, your Rachio will recalculate that schedule's watering cadence and duration (for each zone) based on your zone settings and weather data, just like if you were creating the schedule for the first time. To avoid any watering surprises, we recommend checking the schedule's watering cadence and duration any time you enable or disable seasonal shift on a fixed schedule.

**What if I disable a schedule that uses Seasonal Shift?**

Seasonal Shift will continue to make adjustments (up and down) on all schedules where it is enabled, regardless of whether the schedule itself is enabled or disabled.

Additionally, watering duration adjustments will be made to all zones within such a schedule, regardless of the zone or schedule status (enabled/disabled). This is because the server-side copy of your schedules is being updated constantly for your benefit and then pushed down to your controller. This helps keep your Rachio up-to-date and ready to go the moment you decide to re-enable any of your schedules.

1. **To disable Seasonal Shift** on a Fixed Schedule:
2. Find the navigation bar at the bottom of the app and select the **Schedule** tab.
3. Select the Fixed Schedule you would like to edit
4. Scroll down to **Weather Intelligence.**
5. Uncheck the box marked next to **"Seasonal Shift**" and select **Done.**

# Weather Skips Settings

###

Enabled or Disabled Weather Skips

Skips are an element of Schedules, and you can enable different types of skips for different schedules. First, tap on the watering device you'd like to make changes to. Then go to the “Schedules” tab located at the bottom middle section of your Rachio app. Tap on the three dots next to the schedule you'd like to edit Skips for, tap "Edit Schedule", then scroll down to  “Weather Intelligence” from the menu. Here you can activate or deactivate various skip types for your schedule by toggling the check mark button. ![](https://cdn.kustomerhostedcontent.com/media/5f775c7b7cad407e578daa84/1e1634b364cd352b2afc1b02f9213e93.png)

#### Note

Since Flex Daily schedules are always updating themselves with the newest weather data, Saturation Skip and Rain Skips are not configurable and are “baked in” to Flex Daily schedules. Rather than skipping, Flex Daily simply pushes scheduled watering further forward to account for the received rain.

###

Adjusting Weather Skip Threshold

To adjust your Weather Thresholds, tap the **"Weather"** button at the top of the screen, and select **"Weather thresholds"** from the sub menu. If you have any applicable devices connected to your account, they will be displayed on the list. Simply select the device you'd like to update weather thresholds for, tap the type of threshold you want to edit, then select a value and save your changes. You can also access these thresholds from that device’s own S**ettings** tab.

# Inaccurate Skips

*   ### **Extreme weather**

Conditions (such as hurricanes or tornadoes, for example) not only cause forecasts to change a lot and have strange values, but they may also cause the Weather Stations to report bad data, as strong winds (and even debris) can cause a lot of issues since they will vary a lot.

Due to these extreme weather conditions, our weather provider may delay the delivery of information if the reports fail quality control. We currently evaluate temperature, dew point, humidity, and wind values when determining whether or not an observation passes quality control. For example, any reports above 24 inches or 600 millimetres cause our system to assume it's bad data, and it won't skip.

Regrettably, the system does depend on the weather stations and, sometimes, they may report bad forecasts.

*   **Solution**

After the extreme weather conditions pass and you're still having inaccurate data or skips, a suggestion is to ensure your controller is registered at your actual location, sometimes they report bad forecasts due to an imprecise location.

Another suggestion is to select a single weather station for the controller to receive information from, as in some cases, an individual station can be more accurate.

* ### **Micro Climate and Weather Network**

Areas with microclimates may experience inaccurate Weather Skips when Weather Network is selected as the weather source. While the Weather Network is generally an optimal option—because it pulls data from multiple nearby weather stations—it evaluates conditions based on the majority of those stations. If most stations report favorable weather, schedules will run. As a result, localized conditions in microclimate areas (such as unexpected rain or wind) may not always trigger a skip.

*   **Solution**

If you live in an area with a microclimate, we recommend switching your weather source to a single Weather Station. This can provide more accurate Weather Skips, as the controller will rely on data from one nearby station that better reflects your local conditions.

How to change your weather source

1. Open the Rachio app
2. Tap the **Account** icon in the top-right corner
3. Select **Properties**
4. Choose your address
5. Tap **Weather Source**
6. Change from **Weather Network** to **Weather Station**
7. Select the station closest to your controller on **National or Personal** and tap **Done.**

# Rachio App Forecast vs Other Weather Apps

The weather data displayed in the Rachio app may sometimes differ from what you see in other weather apps or services. This is due to the specific nature of the Rachio weather grid and the way we source weather information.

The forecast on the Home tab comes from our weather data provider, Aeris. Typically, the app will show weather data from the closest weather station to your controller's location. However, there may be instances where our system selects a nearby station that better matches your device’s location within the weather grid. This data could also differ from any personal weather stations you may have, as they may use a combination of local weather data and aggregated weather data from other providers.

![](https://cdn.kustomerhostedcontent.com/media/5f775c7b7cad407e578daa84/cc860d3952a20ad763aab9ed2c7a6ef4.png)

### Re-sync your Weather Location

If the forecast looks significantly different from what you expect or you want to ensure the weather data is locked into the correct address, you can change your address and weather source to something else and switch back to the original setup. Even if the address already looks correct, resetting it can help re-sync the weather data.

**To Reset the Location**

**1.** Go to the **Account** icon in the right-hand corner of the screen

**2.** Click **Properties** and select the P**roperty** you want to edit.

**3.** Select **Address** and hit **Change Address**. Change the address to something slightly different (for example, a nearby house number on your street). Make sure to tap on Update Address to save it.

**4.** Go back into Change Address and change it back to the correct address.

**To Reset the Weather Source**

**1.** Return to the main screen and tap the Weather button at the top of the screen, then select Weather Source.

**2.** Change your weather source, note which option is currently selected:

*      If Weather Network is selected, tap Weather Station and select any other Station.
*      If a Weather Station is selected, tap Weather Network.

**3.** Reopen Weather Source and switch back to your original selection.

**Restart the App**

Force-quit the Rachio app and reopen it. That should be enough to force an update or lock the data source to the correct GPS data.

# Your Weather Source

You can choose a weather source from the Devices Screen by tapping the **"Weather"** button at the top of the screen. Then select **"Weather source"** from the sub menu. You can then select your preferred weather source. This could be a Weather Network, a specific weather station (National or Personal), or a connected Tempest Personal Weather Station (PWS) at your home.

# Weather Underground (PWS) & Rachio

###

### **Want to use your PWS?**

If you would like to use your Personal Weather Station (PWS) with Rachio 3, you’re in luck!

Weather Intelligence™ Plus is built on the largest PWS network in the industry. If you have questions about how to integrate your PWS with Rachio, make sure it’s compatible with Weather Underground, then consult your manufacturer’s guidelines for posting your data. You should see your weather station in your weather source preferences on the Rachio app.

**Personal Weather Station not showing on your Rachio's list?**

A new station will build up its trust factor in 3-4 days, assuming it is providing accurate data regularly; however, this process can take up to 16 days. Stations that provide data that does not pass quality control will take longer to rebuild the trust factor based on how long they have sent faulty information.

We currently evaluate temperature, dew point, humidity, and wind values when determining whether or not an observation passes quality control.

# Weather Source FAQ

**Where does Rachio get its weather data?**

Rachio receives weather data from WeatherUnderground and Aeris Weather Service.

* **Weather Underground,** as part of The Weather Company, pulls current and historical weather data to give us the best-interpolated data to make sure you get the most accurate forecast and precipitation data for your home.
* **Aeris,** formerly known as HamWeather, has a history of collecting data from a large variety of sources, including Ham radio operators, personal weather stations, and official NWS and FAA sources. It's used by organizations like the US Air Force, Polaris, a number of TV broadcasters, and many more. You can find out more on aerisweather.com.

**What kind of PWS integration is available on the Rachio app?**

The Aeris weather service can receive weather observations from two types of weather stations:

1. **Official Weather Stations**Government-sponsored stations are often located at airports. These provide highly reliable data and are always included in Rachio’s weather feed, Rachio's Weather Intelligence and Seasonal Adjustment features use this information.

2. **Personal Weather Stations (PWS)**

Stations reporting to the [WeatherUnderground](http://www.wunderground.com/) network, which is a joint venture between Aeris and [**WeatherForYou.com**](https://www.weatherforyou.com/). This network supports tens of thousands of PWS's across the world, as well as near 'real-time' reporting. Additionally, the weather data from each station is hosted at [**wunderground.com**](https://www.wunderground.com/) and  [**WeatherForYou.com**](https://www.weatherforyou.com/) for consumption in any web browser.

Aeris can optionally provide these weather observations as part of its feed. Because PWS data can vary in quality, Rachio allows users to choose whether to include it.

**How can I check if WeatherUnderground has good support for my area?**

Check the current conditions, past observations, and forecasts for the next week at www.wunderground.com.

**Will the Weather Underground weather reports always be 100% accurate?**

They'll be darn close! Please keep in mind, however, that when the meteorologist on TV says "a 60% chance of rain," what they're really saying is: "the chance of getting any rain at all for your specific area, combined with the chance of your specific location getting rain, totals up to be 60%" (more details).

This means that even with "a 90% chance of precipitation," your yard might very well not get a drop, or with a 10% chance, your neighborhood might get drenched. The weather is complex and inherently hard to predict, but we're working hard to use the latest data and technology to improve your yard.

With Weather Intelligence Plus, however, we can utilize data from a number of sources to further refine our precipitation estimates at the site of your controller. If you'd like to learn more about Weather Intelligence Plus, check out this article.

**Are your weather reports really "real-time"?**

Yes, but please keep the following in mind:

If it suddenly and unexpectedly starts raining 5 minutes before your watering schedule, there is a chance your Rachio could still water.

We use the most up-to-date information available, but we are limited by the weather data that's available at any given time. While most professional weather stations record minute-by-minute observations, they often only report every hour to conserve power. Also, keep in mind that we use a combination of reports and short-term forecasts, which are rarely inaccurate.

**How can I check if Aeris has good support for my area?**

Check the current conditions, past observations, and forecasts for the next week at wx.aerisweather.com.

**Why use Aeris?**

Aeris provides near-real-time weather data, resulting in more accuracy. In addition, we are able to draw from a much larger collection of weather data, as Aeris collects official weather information from stations in Canada, Europe, Australia, and beyond, in addition to personal weather stations (PWS) around the world.

**Aeris doesn't have weather stations close enough to me. Is there something I can do?**

You might want to consider purchasing/integrating a Personal Weather Station (PWS). For more information on Personal Weather Stations, and a wide range of options to fit your time/budget and expertise, please see our  Personal Weather Stations FAQ  article.

**Will the Aeris weather reports always be 100% accurate?**

They'll be darn close! Please keep in mind, however, that when the meteorologist on TV says "a 60% chance of rain," what they're really saying is: "the chance of getting any rain at all for your specific area, combined with the chance of your specific location getting rain, totals up to be 60%" (more details).

This means that even with "a 90% chance of precipitation, your yard might very well not get a drop, or with a 10% chance, your neighborhood might get drenched. The weather is complex and inherently hard to predict, but we're working hard to use the latest data and technology to improve your yard.

**How can I check the weather data of a specific weather station?**

1. Open the Rachio app and go to the **Devices** page, where you can see all your Rachio controllers and other devices.

2. Tap “Weather” on the top portion of the screen.

3. Hit **Weather Source.**

4. Select **Change Station** under Weather Station

5. Click on **More Info** beneath the station you wish to view.

**Note:** You can also change the Weather Thresholds by tapping the **Weather Thresholds** menu. It allows you to select specific weather measurements that should trigger skips or adjustments.

You can also Google search using the following templates:

*   **National Weather Stations (NWS)**

Example: [https://w1.weather.gov/data/obhistory/KECP.html](https://w1.weather.gov/data/obhistory/KECP.html) (notice the station ID is all capitals)

*    **Personal Weather Stations that start with PWS\_**

Example:  [http://www.pwsweather.com/obs/IROZEUS.html](http://www.pwsweather.com/obs/IROZEUS.html) (be sure to remove the 'PWS\_')
