## Smart Sprinkler Controllers

### **Hardware Installation:**

**1\. Removing Your Old Controller:**

* Test your system: Check the functionality of each zone with your current controller before installing the Rachio controller. Find and repair any irrigation issues prior to installing your Rachio.
* Take a picture of the old controller wiring: This picture will be important for reference when you are transferring the wiring to the Rachio.

**2\. Mounting Your Rachio:**

#### Note

Are you a visual learner? Watch the Rachio 3 hardware installation video [here.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ya8JHP-GeeY)

* **Mark screw locations:** Use the Mounting Template at the end of your installation guide to mark where you want to install your Rachio 3. For drywall installation, drill holes at the marked locations for the anchors. Use a 3/16 inch bit to drill through the drywall, then use a hammer to gently tap each anchor into place.
* **Mount your controller:** Screw it onto the wall using the provided screws.
* **Connect your wires:** While referencing the photo of your previous wiring, insert the wires into the appropriate terminals. Things not matching up? Visit [rachio.com/wiring](https://support.rachio.com/en_us/how-to-wire-your-controller-basic-and-advanced-wiring-B1njPIyYD/) for tips on advanced wiring.

**3\. App Setup**

Open the Rachio app and select the "+ADD" button. The app will guide you through the process to connect your controller to Wi-Fi. Now that the controller is online, use the Rachio app to customize your zones and create a schedule.![](https://cdn.kustomerhostedcontent.com/media/5f775c7b7cad407e578daa84/a757e9d1f12f3f3244fcb9be0ec82f6f.png)

## Smart Sprinkler Controllers FAQ

**Will the Rachio controller work with my sprinkler system?**

Our smart sprinkler controller works with almost any existing sprinkler system! The following system types are not currently compatible with Rachio:

*   [Battery-Powered/DC Systems](https://rachio.kustomer.help/en_us/rachio-compatibility-with-dc-solenoids-SJVLPLkKD)
*   2-Wire Systems
* Most Commercial Systems with too many wires or zones

**How do I know if my valves are compatible?**

The Rachio Smart Sprinkler Controllers are compatible with 24V AC solenoid valves, which are the standard for U.S. irrigation systems. So if you're located in North America, then your irrigation system is most likely compatible with a Rachio Smart Sprinkler Controller.

If your system does not use these kinds of valves, you will want to replace them with 24V AC valves before installing your controller. If you are unsure of what kind of valves you have, we recommend consulting an irrigation professional.

**Is it easy to wire up/install?**

The Rachio 3 Smart Sprinkler Controller has streamlined hardware for quick and easy installation. Our new easy-press connectors accommodate 14 & 18 gauge wire, making Rachio 3 installation a breeze compared to other controllers on the market. Mount and connect to Wi-Fi in 15 minutes or less, with no special tools or expertise required! The Rachio app provides guided installation every step of the way. Steps are easy – replace your old controller, plug in existing wires, and complete setup within the free Rachio app.

**Do I need a rain/soil sensor?**

Rachio Smart Sprinklers controllers do not require any rain or soil sensors to take full advantage of smart watering. In fact, the Rachio controller acts as both a soil and rain sensor by using our powerful software, numerous zone settings, and advanced weather forecasting to eliminate the need for external sensors (though you can certainly add one or both if you like!).

* Find compatible Rain sensors [here.](https://support.rachio.com/en_us/rain-sensors-faq-BkWRP8JKP)
* Find Compatible Soil sensors [here.](https://support.rachio.com/en_us/soil-sensor-faq-B1Q1dI1Fv)

**Is the Rachio 3 compatible with my other equipment? What about my existing flow meter?**

You will be able to wire any existing flow meter to Rachio 3. For a list of compatible equipment, see [here.](https://support.rachio.com/en_us/wired-flow-sensor-compatibility-and-installation-Syo0DIyYw)

**Can the controller be used outside?**

While the Rachio controller itself is not weatherproof, we offer an outdoor enclosure to mount your controller outside. The outdoor enclosure is fully weatherproof and can withstand temperatures between -4°F and 140°F. All mounting hardware is included in the enclosure box, which can be purchased along with your Rachio 3 Smart Sprinkler Controller on Rachio.com. Already have a Gen 2 outdoor enclosure? You can use it with your Rachio 3!

**What happens if I lose Wi-Fi connection?**

If you temporarily lose internet connectivity, your Rachio controller will attempt to reconnect to your network every 30 seconds for 24 hours, after which point your controller will go offline. If this happens, you will need to manually unplug your Rachio and plug it back in (you may also need to do this with your router). Each controller has a small amount of built-in memory so that any schedules or settings you had before the connection loss will be saved. Your controller will continue to run those schedules indefinitely until it can reconnect (and update, if needed). So don’t fear - your lawn won’t be without water if you lose connection!

**What happens if I lose power?**

All of our controllers have built-in memory and a small battery to save time. So once your home regains power, it will pick up right where it left off. In case you need a new Rachio power adapter for your controller, you can simply follow this [link](https://rachio.com/products/controller-power-supply) to buy it from our online store.

**How much data does a Rachio use?**

* The Rachio Controller uses extremely low bandwidth. On the low end, around 300-400kb per day. On average, around 700kb per day
* On the high end is around 1.2 megabytes per day. The one potential issue that would increase data usage would be when a customer uploads Zone photos

**Can the controllers be shared with other accounts?**

You can absolutely share your Rachio sprinkler controllers with another user. If you are a homeowner and would like to share access to your irrigation specialist or a family member, you can do so from within the app. More information is available [here.](https://rachio.kustomer.help/en_us/how-to-share-a-rachio-device-Byu6vUkFD)

**Can I add more than one controller to the app?**

You can add and manage multiple devices from your Rachio account using the same app, and you can also separate controllers by address.

**Can the controllers be merged within the app to appear as one larger controller?**

Unfortunately, no. At this time, the devices cannot be merged within the app, nor are they aware of each other - they will need to be operated as independent controllers. Do you have a yard with more than 16 irrigation zones? Below are a couple of ways to avoid any sort of collisions with schedules on two (or more) controllers:

* Try scheduling the separate controllers on different days. This can be done in both automatic and manual modes.
* If you live in an area with restrictions, try scheduling one controller late in the evening and the other one early in the morning.

**Do you adjust automatically based on weather forecasts?**

Your Rachio controller will adjust not only when it waters, but how it waters, based on what the connected weather station has seen, as well as what it predicts. Depending on your schedule type, it will utilize different “Weather Intelligence” features in relation to the weather station forecasts, to skip a watering, or push the schedule out to a date in the future when your yard will need it.

**Do you allow for watering restrictions in my area?**

Absolutely! Working with water utilities and municipalities around the United States, as well as professional irrigation specialists, we understand just how important it is to work with them to better understand the need for restrictions in place. Therefore, we have added in features to allow Rachio users to plug in which days or patterns they are restricted to, and it’s as simple as choosing the option within the app!

**Can I manually control my Rachio 3 controller from the unit?**

Yes! Your Rachio 3 includes manual controls that let you select a zone and run it for a default of 3 minutes directly from the controller. The device features a 4-way button that allows you to choose a zone and start, stop, or pause watering.

To run a zone manually, press Next Zone until you reach the zone you want, then press Play. The selected zone will run for 3 minutes. You can pause or stop the run at any time, skip to the next zone, or return to the previous one using the buttons on the controller.

You can also control and monitor watering from the Rachio app on any mobile device. We recommend using the app if you need to run zones for longer periods or want more control options.
