Matter and Thread solve these issues. ### ### What Are They? * **Matter** is a universal smart home standard backed by Apple, Google, Amazon, Samsung, and others. It lets devices work together across platforms like Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, and SmartThings. * **Thread** is a wireless networking protocol that creates a fast, low-power mesh network for smart devices, making your home network more reliable and efficient. ### Why It Matters * **Cross-platform Compatibility**: Matter devices speak the same language and work with major smart home systems. * **Reliable Connectivity**: Thread devices talk directly to each other, strengthening your home network. * **Future-Proof**: Built-in security, local control (for some devices), and no dependence on cloud services. #### Note At launch, the Rachio Smart Lighting Controller uses Wi-Fi and Bluetooth—not Thread—and does not support local control. These features are planned for a future update (targeting 2026). ### Wireless Connection Technologies * **Bluetooth** is used during onboarding to pass Wi-Fi credentials from your phone to the SLC. * **Wi-Fi** connects your SLC to the internet and enables remote control. * **Matter** allows the SLC to be linked to any Matter-compatible smart home hub or app, though it comes into play _after_ the initial setup in the Rachio app. Thread support and Matter-based local control are planned for future updates, along with the ability for the SLC to act as a Thread Border Router. * * * ## Recommended Setup Path **We strongly recommend users:** 1. **First, pair the SLC with the Rachio app** to unlock the full feature set (Scenes, Automations, Areas, etc.). 2. Then, **optionally** **link it with a Matter-enabled app** (like Google Home or Apple Home). **Why this order matters:** * If you pair with a third-party app _before_ Rachio, you'll need to find the pairing flow in your third-party Matter app in order to pair it to Rachio. * Scenes, Areas, and Automations created in the Rachio app **do not transfer** to other apps, and vice versa. * The Rachio app allows the SLC to run Automations even if offline, which other apps may not support. #### Note You can use the SLC exclusively with a Matter hub and app without ever using the Rachio app, but this is not recommended for most customers. * * * ## Third-Party Smart Home App Compatibility The SLC is compatible with any Matter-certified hub or app, including (but not limited to): * **Apple Home** * **Google Home** * **Amazon Alexa** * **Samsung SmartThings** * **Home Assistant** * **Hubitat** * **IFTTT** (via [this link](https://ifttt.com/rachio_smart_lighting_controller)) However, the onboarding process may look different in each app. Below, we'll provide separate how-to guides for the most popular platforms. * * * ## How to Find Your Pairing Code ### **If you've already added the SLC to a 3rd party app and would also like to connect the SLC to the Rachio App, follow the instructions below:** #### #### Apple Home: 1. Open the Apple Home app and select your SLC. 2. Tap Device Settings > "Turn On Pairing Mode." 3. Copy the setup code. 4. In the Rachio App, tap "+ADD" to add a device, then tap "Lighting Controller." 5. Select “This device has already been set up in a Matter-supported app." 6. Paste the pairing code in the Rachio App and follow the in-app instructions. #### Google Home: 1. Open the Google Home app and go to the SLC settings (usually by tapping and holding the device's icon). 2. Tap "Linked Matter apps & services" > "Link apps & services." 3. Select "Using pairing code" and copy it. 4. In the Rachio App, tap "+ADD" to add a device, then tap "Lighting Controller." 5. Select “This device has already been set up in a Matter-supported app.” 6. Paste the pairing code in the Rachio App and follow the in-app instructions. #### Amazon Alexa: 1. Open the Alexa app and go to the SLC settings. 2. Tap "Other Assistants and Apps" > "Add Another." 3. Copy the 11-digit setup code. 4. In the Rachio App, tap "+" to add a device, then tap "Lighting Controller." 5. Select “This device has already been set up in a Matter-supported app." 6. Paste the setup code in the Rachio App and follow the in-app instructions. * * * ### ### If you've added the SLC to the Rachio App first, and would now like to link a 3rd Party App, follow the instructions below: #### iOS: 1. Open the Apple Home app and tap the (+) to add an accessory. 2. Lift the Smart Lighting Controller's front plate and scan the QR code. 3. Follow the steps in the Apple Home app to connect SLC with Apple Home. #### On Android: 1. Open the Rachio App and tap your Smart Lighting Controller 2. Choose "Set up without QR code." 8.
