### Interpreting Light Codes and Get Started

The LED lights on the Rachio 3 and Gen 2 smart sprinkler controllers serve as indicators to the controllers’ current light code status. The LEDs on both devices are arranged into four equally spaced quadrants; 1, 2, 3 and 4. During connection, the light bar will fill progressively, beginning with quadrant 1, and ending at quadrant 4.

#### Rachio 3 Sprinkler Controller

The light bar on the Rachio 3 is horizontal, with the four quadrants running from left to right. The farthest point the light bar is illuminated will indicate your quadrant light code. For example: if the first (leftmost) quadrant light is solid, and the second quadrant is flashing, you’re observing a Light 2 code.

#### Gen 2 Sprinkler Controller

The light column on the Rachio Gen 2 is vertical, with the four quadrants arranged from bottom to top. The farthest point the light column is illuminated will indicate your quadrant light code. For example: if the first (bottommost) quadrant light is solid, and the second quadrant is flashing, you’re observing a Light 2 code.

Our in-app help tool also makes troubleshooting a breeze! Once you've identified the light code, tap Troubleshoot on the "Controller Offline" banner at the top of the Home tab, and follow the prompts in the app. Tap the quadrant number that corresponds to the current light code to get started.

## Light 1

If your controller is stuck on the first quadrant/light, the device is having trouble booting up. This issue typically arises when your controller loses its encrypted wifi radio configuration that allows it to connect to your router. A large surge in power, often associated with lightning, can cause the controller to lose power unexpectedly and lose its wifi radio configuration if it was attempting to maintain its wifi connection. Here are the steps to follow for this light code:

1. Press and hold the Play button.

2. From 0-5 seconds, no change in LED.

3. From 5-20 seconds, the LED bar begins to fill white from left to right.

4. At 20 seconds, the LED bar will flash green 2 times; you can release the button when this happens.

5. The green LED bar will then collapse from the edges to the center 10 times.

6. The controller will reboot. Please wait a few seconds until it starts blinking yellow on the second quadrant. We recommend performing a factory reset before attempting to connect it.

For a Generation 2 controller flashing on the first light, we'll perform a [factory reset](https://rachio.kustomer.help/en_us/preview/article/updating-your-wi-fi-network-r1QfhAeGbe#:~:text=additional%2520troubleshooting%2520steps.-,Rachio%2520Generation%25202,-1.%25C2%25A0Unplug):

1. Unplug the controller from the outlet for 2 minutes.
2. Before you plug it back in, please press and hold the **Up** arrow and the **Select** button. Keep them pressed, plug the controller back in, and only release the buttons once the light ring is fully illuminated. When light 2 starts flashing,  reattempt connecting the controller through the Rachio App Settings (Settings tab > Update Wifi Network).

##

## Light 2

A yellow/orange light blinking means the controller is ready to connect to your network. If your controller doesn’t move past a second light/quadrant after several attempts, or changes to a second-quadrant white with an occasional red blink, it indicates a signal strength issue or a wrong password input. For troubleshooting, please refer to the section [Wifi Troubleshooting Steps](#section-4).

#### Note

If you have a Rachio 3 that was manufactured before June 2020 and the steps in this section do not resolve the issue, the problem may be due to a one-time compatibility issue with the device being used during setup or related to an old firmware version. In this case, please follow the steps in the article [Connect Rachio 3 to WiFi Using a Laptop or Older Mobile Device](https://support.rachio.com/HJIBvLyFv).

## Light 3

If your controller does not move past the third light/quadrant, it indicates that it’s connected to your network, but there could be a setting within your router not allowing it to connect to the internet. For troubleshooting, please refer to the section [Wifi Troubleshooting Steps](#section-4).

## Wifi Troubleshooting Steps

1. Power cycle your router/modem and additional access points.

While most routers just need to be unplugged and plugged back in to restart them, we recommend referring to your router’s documentation for specific instructions. Once your router finishes restarting, test it by connecting to your Wi-Fi network with a computer or mobile device and visiting a popular website.
2. If you have a VPN enabled on your mobile device, disable it temporarily while you attempt to connect your Rachio device.

3. Forget your Wifi network from your phone and reconnect to it.

This will allow you to confirm the password in your network and clear cached or stale connection settings in your device.

4. Perform a [**regular Wifi update**](https://support.rachio.com/en_us/reconnecting-an-offline-rachio-sprinkler-controller-r1QfhAeGbe#section-2) and attempt to reconnect your controller.

If this fails, please attempt a [**factory reset**](https://support.rachio.com/en_us/reconnecting-an-offline-rachio-sprinkler-controller-r1QfhAeGbe#section-3) and try to reconnect your controller once more.

### Important Wifi Requirements to note:

If you performed the steps above and your controller does not go past the second or third light, here are a few things to check before attempting to connect your controller once more:

* **Wireless Frequency:** 802.11b/g/n (2.4 GHz), 802.11ac/n (5 GHz). The Rachio Gen 1 and Gen 2 controllers support 2.4GHz networks only, while the Rachio 3 is compatible with both 2.4GHz and 5GHz. Dual-band (2.4 / 5 GHz) is supported, but "blended" networks are not recommended.
* **SSI****D:** We do not support non-standard characters in SSIDs or passphrases for wireless networks. This is classified as any emoji, not English letter symbols added from Unicode Revision 9.0.0 onward. (Ex: 😂女书↪)
* **Encryption:** Only WPA2-Personal or WPA2-PSK is supported. Older WEP is not acceptable, and we do not work with enterprise-level encryption most of the time. We also do not support splash pages/captive portals or MAC address filtering. Rachio cannot connect to open networks either.
* Make sure that  **MAC address** **filtering** on your router is disabled.
    * If you prefer to keep your MAC address filtering on, you will need to add the controller's MAC address to your router's access control list. Your MAC address can be found in your Rachio app, under Settings > Technical info, and in the sticker on the controller that includes the serial number.
* **Reserve an IP** **address** for your controller and/or increase the lease time on your DHCP.
    * Reserving an IP address for your controller will ensure that every time the controller requests an IP address from your router, it will receive the same address. Increasing the lease time will enable your controller to have an IP address for a longer period of time without having to request a new one.
* Check if there are any **ports** that are being blocked and stopping the Rachio from connecting. Make sure the following ports(outbound traffic) are open:

Device / Service

Port

Generation 2

53, 8883, 123, 443

Rachio 3

53, 8883, 123, 443

### **Still not working?**

If the controller successfully connects to a phone hotspot, this indicates that the connection is likely being blocked by a setting within your router. We recommend creating a dedicated 2.4 GHz guest network on your router and trying to connect your Rachio controller to that network. In many cases, adjusting the Wi-Fi settings in this way can resolve the issue.

If your setup does not support a dedicated 2.4 GHz guest network, please run a network scan using the “Router This Helps” app. This scan will help identify any Wi-Fi settings in particular that may be blocking the connection, so you can adjust your network configuration accordingly.
