Summary

Laying down a new seed? When you apply new seed to your lawn, keeping the soil moist and watering multiple times a day is key. Thankfully, creating a schedule for new seeding is now easier than ever within the Rachio app! In this article, you will find a step-by-step on how to create a new seeding schedule for your Yard.

Please Note

The Rachio Generation 1 Smart Sprinkler Controller does not support Hourly Interval watering.

Hourly Interval using Cycle and Soak

The strength of this setup is that you can bypass the regular Hourly Interval not ending limitation. For illustration purposes, imagine you want to have a Schedule starting at 8 AM and stopping at 8 PM, with hourly runs, every day. The necessary steps to accomplish that are outlined below:

  • Go to the Schedules tab
  • Then hit Create Schedule;
  • Select Fixed Schedule;
  • Select the zones you want to water, and name your schedule after that;
  • Select Daily Interval, and then Every day;
  • Select Start at a specific time and set it to 8 AM, for instance;
  • Start/End date you can set as you wish;
  • Then you hit Manual Cycle and Soak;
  • Cycle time will be 5min and Soak time 55min;
  • You hit Next until Watering duration;
  • On Watering Duration you will set it to 1hr 5min; (increase or decrease this duration by 5 minutes for each hour you'd like the schedule to run.
  • Your schedule is created.

Hourly Interval

Quick note: this type of new seeding schedule does not have set start and end times - meaning it will simply run every X hours according to the number of hourly interval you've determined in the Schedule setup screen. If you need it to stop at some point of the day, you can enable the Cycle and Soak feature as described above. Keep in mind that, due to the nature of new seed and hourly schedules, Weather Intelligence™ Plus features are not available for these types of schedules.

Want a quick and hassle-free way to set up a watering schedule for newly seeded areas? We recommend creating a Fixed Schedule that waters at hourly intervals (multiple times a day on a reliable interval).

Create a new Fixed Schedule with hourly interval watering

  1. Create Fixed Schedule

    In the Rachio app, select the "Schedules" tab followed by the "Create a new schedule" button at the bottom of the screen, then select "Fixed" (good for gardens, new sod, or areas with strict watering restrictions) from the list of schedule types. Then name your new schedule.

  2. Select zones

    Select which zones you would like to include. If all of your zones have new seeds, select all zones. If you would like only specific zones included in this schedule, select those that should apply.

  3. Select hourly interval

    When asked when you would like to water, select "Hourly interval" from the list.

  4. Set watering frequency

    Next, set your hourly interval. Select how often throughout the day you would like to water-seeded areas. Choose between watering every hour, every 2 hours, every 4 hours, or every 6 hours.

  5. Complete your schedule

    Complete your schedule selections within the app. Decide what time and day your schedule will begin (or end).

Create Multiple Fixed Schedules

You can utilize multiple Fixed Schedules (one for every point in time you want to water). The strength of this type of setup is that you get to determine not only how many times to water in a day but also when each watering starts down to the minute. It does require a little more of a setup process but offers more customization options. To make this process even easier, see the "Duplicate Schedules" section below.

Here are some step-by-step instructions below for your reference.

1) Log onto the Rachio app;

2) Tap on 'Schedules' at the bottom of the screen;

3) Tap on the 'Create schedule' symbol towards the bottom of the screen;

4) Tap on 'Fixed';

5) All zones are selected by default, if you wish to deselect a zone, tap on each one you do not want to water on this schedule - Tap on Next;

6) Name your schedule - I'd recommend 7 AM Watering (assuming this is the first point in time you want to water) - Tap on Next;

7) Tap on 'Specific Days';

8) Tap on the checkboxes for each day you want your Rachio to water at 7:00 AM - Tap on Next;

9) Tap on 'Start at a specific time' - Set the time with the prompt that pops up below (in this case 7:00 AM) - Tap on Done - Tap on Next;

10) If you want this schedule to end on a specific date, tap on 'End Date' then Select the day you want this schedule to not automatically water anymore - Tap Done or just tap on Next;

11) For a new seed/sod schedule such as this, we recommend tapping on 'No cycle and soak' - Tap on Next;

12) On this screen, most users will disable Rain Skip, Saturation Skip, and Seasonal Shift so the Rachio doesn't skip waterings, although you could disable them all if you wish. Tap on the Weather Intelligence features you do not want to utilize - Tap on Next;

13) Set the watering durations for each zone using the + and - buttons next to each of your zone names - Scroll down to 'Next' and tap on it;

14) Repeat steps 3-13 for each other watering time that you need;

Duplicate Schedules

You can also create a Fixed and duplicate it.

From the Schedules screen, tap Create Schedule. You can use as a reference the first 13 steps above. After the first schedule is created, go to the Schedules screen again and tap the kebab menu (three vertical dots) next to the name of the schedule you just created to see the Duplicate schedule option.

You can do that as many times as you want these zones to run every day. Just make sure to go into the newly duplicated schedules, tap the kebab menu, and then Edit Schedule in order to change their starting times, since new seed normally needs to be watered multiple times a day following specific time intervals.
