# Quick Checks and Automatic Fixes

Always begin with the simplest and most effective steps.

1. **Use the In-App Help Tool**
If your controller is offline, tap the red "Offline" banner at the top of the Home screen. This in-app tool provides automatic, guided troubleshooting to identify the problem and suggest a quick fix.

2\. **Power Cycle the Network Equipment**
The best first step for intermittent issues is to restart your router.

* Unplug your router (and modem, if separate) for at least 30 seconds.
* Plug them back in and wait a few minutes for them to restart and stabilize fully.
* Test the connection with a mobile device. Steps can be found in this [article](https://support.rachio.com/en_us/how-to-connect-a-rachio-to-a-mobile-hotspot-S1FgqxLLY).

3\. **Power Cycle the Rachio Controller**
Try manually power cycling your controller.

* Unplug the power cord from your Rachio.
* Wait 10 seconds, then plug it back in.
* Take note of the light code the controller is flashing.

4\. **Update Wi-Fi Network Information**
If you have recently changed your network settings (**SSID** or **Password**), you must update your controller's saved credentials.

* From your Rachio App Homepage, go to Settings tab> Update Wi-Fi Network.
* Be sure to enter your network password correctly, as credentials are **case-sensitive**.

## Basic Network and Signal Troubleshooting

These steps address common causes like weak signals and network interference.

1\. **Check Wi-Fi Signal Strength**
**A weak signal** is the most common cause of intermittent connection problems.

* Walk to the location of your controller and check the signal bars on your smartphone. We recommend at least 2 bars for a reliable connection.
* You can also check the **RSSI**(Received Signal Strength Indicator) value in the Rachio App (Settings> Technical Info).
    * **Recommended Range**: The ideal RSSI is between **\-45** and **\-65**.
    * **Signal Too Weak**: If the RSSI is **less than -69**, the signal is too weak. Consider a Wi-Fi extender.
    * **Signal Too Strong**: If the RSSI is **more than -45**, the access point may be too close.

2\. **Address Wireless** **Interference.** Materials in your home can interfere with the connection between your router and your controller.

* **Interfering Materials**: Metal, concrete, marble, and water (plaster, synthetics, and wood cause less interference).

* **Source Interference**: Electric motors (in appliances) and **sprinkler system pump start relays** can cause electromagnetic interference. Make sure your controller is at least **15 feet away** from pump start relays.

* **Solution**: Try moving your router out from underneath/behind a desk, or consider purchasing a **Wi-Fi extender/booster** or a **power line adapter** to strengthen the signal.

3\. **Verify Router Requirements and Settings**
The Rachio controller requires specific network settings:

* **Security Encryption**: Must use **WPA or WPA2 Personal (or WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK)**. Rachio will not connect to **WEP, WPA2-Enterprise,** or **Open networks**.
*   **Frequency Compatibility**:
    *   **Gen 1 & Gen 2**: Require a **2.4 GHz****connection**.
    *   **Rachio 3**: Can use a **2.4 GHz or 5 GHz connection**.
* **Wi-Fi Channels**: Rachio only supports channels 1-11. If your router moves to a higher channel (like 12 or 13 in Europe), the network will become invisible.
* **Blended Frequencies (NOT RECOMMENDED)**: If your 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands share the same name ("blended" network), the controller may frequently disconnect as it tries to switch bands. **Separated bands are recommended**.

## Advanced Network Configuration (Router Settings)

When connectivity issues persist, you may need to adjust your router's advanced settings. **Proceed with CAUTION**. You may need to consult your **Internet Service Provider (ISP)** or your router's documentation.

1\. **MAC Address Filtering**

* Make sure **MAC address filtering** on your router is **disabled**.
* If you must keep it on, you will need to add the controller's MAC address to your router's access control list. The MAC address is in the Rachio App (**Technical Info**) and on the controller's sticker.

2\. **Firewall and Outbound Ports**
Your controller needs to make outgoing connections through specific ports. Ensure **these are not blocked** by your firewall, VPN, or security software.

Device / Service

Outbound Port(s)

Generation 1

53, 31314, 443

Generation 2

53, 8883, 123, 443

Rachio 3

53, 8883, 123, 443

Firmware updates

80

#### Caution

These ports are for **outgoing traffic only**. **DO NOT use port forwarding** to forward traffic from the internet to the unit, as this is a security vulnerability.

3\. **IP Address Management (DHCP)**
To prevent the controller from losing its connection when its lease expires, you may need to:

* **Reserve an IP address (Static IP)**for the Rachio controller. This ensures it always receives the same address, improving connection stability, especially with mesh networks or blended frequencies.
    * Steps: 1. Set a static private IP address. 2. Reboot the router. 3. Update the Wi-Fi network on the Rachio app.
* **Increase the lease time** on your DHCP settings.

4\. **Troubleshooting Specific Networks**

* **Mesh Networks**: These often act as multiple access points, causing the controller to bounce and disconnect. **Assigning a static IP address** is a definitive solution.
* **Duplicate SSIDs**: If you have multiple access points broadcasting the exact same SSID, the controller may struggle to connect properly. **Change the SSID names and passwords** to be unique for each access point, or use a **2.4 GHz guest network**.
* **Incompatible or Older Routers**: Some older networking equipment may lack support for protocols Rachio uses. **Update your router firmware** or check if your model is listed as incompatible (e.g., Cisco RE1000, Motorola SBG6580 often default to WEP encryption).

5\. **Run a Network Diagnostic**
If you are still experiencing issues, run the secure, remote network diagnostic tool offered in partnership with **RouteThis**.

* Run our network diagnostic tool by following the steps [here](https://support.rachio.com/en_us/rachio-3-gen-2-light-codes-and-wifi-troubleshooting-HyNgl1bGbg#section-4).

## Other Factors & Next Steps

1\. **Controller Offline During Watering**
If your controller only goes offline **while it's watering**, it may be an issue with the wiring or the irrigation system itself (a **zone fault**).

* Zone faults occur when the controller receives too much electricity, causing it to shut down.
* Check the app for a **"Zone Fault Detected"** notification on a specific zone.
* Refer to the [Troubleshooting Watering Issues and Zone Faults](https://support.rachio.com/en_us/troubleshooting-watering-issues-and-zone-faults-B1A9DL1tD) article for detailed troubleshooting steps.

##

If the steps above do not resolve the issue, try connecting your Rachio device to a mobile hotspot. This helps isolate the problem and determine whether it’s related to your router or the Rachio device itself. Instructions for setting this up can be found in this [article](https://support.rachio.com/en_us/how-to-connect-a-rachio-to-a-mobile-hotspot-S1FgqxLLY).

1. If the controller connects successfully, the issue is likely caused by a setting on your router. In this case, try creating a guest network on your router and connecting the Rachio device to it.
2. If the issue persists, contact your internet service provider (ISP) to further troubleshoot your network and confirm if any services or ports are being blocked.
3. If the controller does not connect to the hotspot, please reach out to our support team for further assistance.
