Upgrading your controller to a Rachio 3

Ready to upgrade your controller to a Rachio 3? Our Rachio 3 controller was designed with easy installation in mind. You can transfer your settings (such as zone settings and schedules) and take advantage of new software features. This article will provide instructions for replacing your current controller with a Rachio 3.

Critical Note on Settings Transfers:

If you plan to transfer your zone and schedule settings from your old rachio controller to your new one, DO NOT remove your old controller from your account until the transfer process has been completed.

Wiring and Wall Mounting

Begin by taking a picture of your current controller's wiring configuration; this will provide a reference point when you wire the Rachio 3. The numbered Zone terminals will correlate directly from your old controller to the Rachio 3, as will terminals M (Master Valve) and C (Common Wire). For wiring tips, take a look at our quick start guide here. Wires can be inserted directly into the terminals with minimal effort. If you accidentally place the wrong wire into a terminal, simply lift the lever above the terminal, remove the wire, and re-insert the wire in the correct location. The Rachio 3 will accept wiring with a gauge between 14 and 22 AWG.

In the back of the Quick Start Guid (included with every controller purchase) you'll find a handy detachable mounting template with pre-marked hole spacing for easy drywall drilling and mounting. These specifications are the same for a Rachio Generation 2 and Rachio 3, so the same mounting holes can be used. The Rachio Weatherproof Enclosure is also compatible with both models!

Wi-Fi Connection and Settings Transfer

For tips on installing your Rachio 3, visit our installation guide and video tutorials.

The Rachio 3 connects to Wi-Fi via the RachioApp, using an iOS or Android mobile device. The Rachio 3 can connect to both 2.4GHz and 5GHz, as well as to blended and mesh networks.

Note on Settings Transfer Qualifications:

In order to transfer Zone Settings and Schedules to the Rachio 3, you must be upgrading to a controller that supports an equal or greater number of zones than your older model.

Transferring settings from your old Rachio controller

During Zone Setup, you'll have the option to set up your zones from scratch, or transfer settings from an old Rachio controller. To transfer, select "Transfer Settings" and then select the controller settings you wish to copy.

Have a Rain Sensor?

Although most Rain Sensors will work with the Rachio 3 without issue, the terminal wiring nomenclature may differ from that of your previous controller.

While S1 and S2 ports are the same for all controllers, the Rachio 3 replaces SC (Sensor Common) with 24VAC-, and SP (Sensor Power) with 24VAC+. The wires in these terminals should be transferred to their respective new versions.
