How does the Rachio differ from the standard irrigation system controller?
Unlike your typical irrigation system controllers, Rachio controllers do not rely on complex knobs or buttons. The system is controlled through an app on your phone that has been designed specifically to make your experience painless and intuitive. It also ties in the weather, adjusting your watering schedule automatically.
How many zones can I connect my Rachio controller to?
We offer a 8 zone unit and a 16 zone unit.
What if I have more than 16 zones?
You can connect multiple controllers within one Rachio Account on the Rachio app. For example, if you have 24 zones, you can combine one 8-zone and one 16-zone controller on one account to cover all your zones.
Does the Rachio support a combination of grass, xeriscape, and vegetable garden zones?
Yes, our controller is specifically designed to accommodate multiple zone types. It makes creating different schedules for each one of them amazingly easy.
Will Rachio controller(s) work for my yard?
Whether you already have an irrigation controller installed, or you are in the market for a new irrigation controller, the only thing you need to run a Rachio is WiFi and a mobile device (iOS or Android). Please refer to our Quick Start Guide
How easy is it to install the Rachio?

If you're not very handy, we have local pros in most markets that are available to install our controllers for a fee.
Do I need WiFi for my Rachio to work?
Yes. All you need is a WiFi connection for the controller to work properly.
Is there a built-in backup schedule?
Yes. Anytime your controller goes offline, it will continue to use the last saved schedule. We'll notify you anytime your Rachio has been offline for over 24 hours.
What if my Rachio breaks or doesn’t work?
Does the Rachio have a battery backup?
Should you lose power, the system will not run, as there's no way to power the solenoid valves. When power is restored, the controller will try to reconnect to the WiFi. If for some reason the router doesn't come back up, the unit will continue to run the last schedule it has and we'll send you an email notifying you that your Rachio controller is no longer connected.
Please note, although the Rachio has a battery back up, it's not used to operate a watering schedule; its only use is to maintain an internal clock so that when the device comes back online, it knows what time it is so it can maintain the backup schedule, should the unit be unable to reconnect to WiFi.

Will my Rachio monitor moisture in the soil?
No. Smart irrigation controllers vary based on the type of data they are using. There are two types of smart controllers: climatologically/evapotranspiration-based (ET) controllers and soil moisture-based (SMS) controllers. The Rachio is an ET controller.
How is the Rachio smart if it cannot directly monitor moisture in the soil?
Although the software doesn't currently include a way to directly monitor soil moisture, we do estimate soil moisture using ET calculations.
Evapotranspiration (ET) is the process of transpiration by plants combined with evaporation that occurs from plant and soil surfaces; the sum of evaporation and plant transpiration from the surface into the atmosphere. This is a measure of how much water is leaving the ground and tells us how much water needs to be put back in.
